Fraction Word Problems



1. There are 24 hours in a day and scientists tell us that we should sleep for 3/8 of the day. How much time should we spend sleeping?

2. The National History Museum has a collection toy 125 dinosaurs. George has collected 3/5 of this amount. How many dinosaurs has George collected?

3. Peter is 160cm tall and his brother Tom is 7/8 as tall as him. How tall is Tom?

4. Skateboards cost £36 each in my local store. The shopkeeper says if I buy one I can buy another for only 7/9 of the normal price. How much would a second skateboard cost?

5.On the Maths worksheet, there were 72 word problems to solve. Students had to work in pairs.

John did 2/3 and Mark did 1/4 of the problems.

a. How many problems did they do in total?
b. How many problems did each student solve?

Word problems and fraction forms.


              Converting information into fraction form.

     Examples

1.  There were 20 cookies and John ate 12.
     That would be the same as 12/20.

2.  In the box there are 15 marbles and Jenny lost 5 marbles. That would be the same as 5/15.

3.  There are 80 pages in Paul’s book. Last night he read 20 pages. In fraction form it would be 20/80.


Now it’s your turn. Convert the information given into fraction forms.


1.  Bob packed twenty grapes and a pear in his lunch. He ate twelve grapes and the pear.
What fraction of the grapes did Bob eat?

 2. Terri, Samantha, and Jodi each bought shoes   for the party. Terri and Jodi bought shoes with heels. Samantha bought flats.
What fraction of the girls bought shoes with heels?

3.For track practice, runners were supposed to walk or run twenty laps. Sara jogged 15 laps and Tom jogged 5 laps. Show this in fraction form.

4.  There were 28 words in the spelling test and Jim got 20 right. Show this in fraction form.


5.  I am reading a story which has 350 pages. So far I have read 200 pages. Show this in fraction form.
