Read the word problem carefully and then decide if you need to add or subtract. Don't forget to write the measurement unit (pie,cups liters etc)
Remember : add or subractonly the numerators. Do not alter the denominators.
Example : 1/8 + 3/8 = 4/8
: 6/10 - 2/10 = 4/10
1. At a pie-eating contest, Robert got through 6/8 of a pie before time was called; Clara finished just 5/8 of a pie. How much more pie did Robert eat than Clara?
2. While making desserts for a bake sale, Kiera used 3/4 of a scoop of brown sugar as well as 1/4 of a scoop of white sugar. How much more brown sugar did Kiera use?
3. For a class gardening project, 3/8 of Mrs. Robinson's students planted marigolds and 1/8 planted tulips. What fraction of the class planted either marigolds or tulips?
4. One evening, a restaurant served a total of 2/4 of a loaf of wheat bread and 1/4 of a loaf of white bread. How many loaves were served in all?
5. Shing takes a piece of wood that is 5/8 of an inch thick and glues it to a piece of wood that is 1/8 of an inch thick. Together, what is the thickness of the two pieces of wood?
6. Last year, Sidney grew 2/5 of an inch and her brother grew 1/5 of an inch. How much more did Sidney grow than her brother?
7. Ruth went to the salon and had 3/6 of an inch of hair cut off. The next day she went back and asked for another 2/6 of an inch to be cut off. How much hair did she have cut off in all?
8. Carter initially filled a measuring cup with 3/4 of a cup of syrup from a large jug. Then he poured 2/4 of a cup back into the jug. How much syrup remains in the measuring cup?
9. Jenny made a dessert with 1/8 of a cup of vanilla ice-cream and 5/8 of a cup of chocolate ice-cream. How many cups of ice-cream did Jenny use in all?
10.In the morning, Dina drove to the store and used 1/5 of a liter of gas. In the afternoon, she drove to the movie theater and used 3/5 of a liter of gas. How much gas did Dina use in all?
